Andy,

Just wanted to tell you a quick story. Last week I went mountain biking for
the first time in two months. I ride with a group who ride 2-3 times weekly,
kite surf on weekends and generally don't stop working out.

Early December I last rode with them and barely made it up the steep 3 mile
hill and I am sure they waited for about 10 minutes at the top.

Last week I rode with my old group, having not biked since December. My
only workout has been my two Petranek classes weekly over the last 2 1/2
months.

When I reached the top of the mountain, I turned around and noticed that I
couldn't see anyone coming. Not only had I left them behind, but I felt for
the first time in years that I could have kept on going at top speed.

Story speaks for itself but boy does it illustrate the benefits of your
training program on all facets of exercise and sports...it also made me
enjoy rather than dread riding up that steep hill again.

See you this afternoon and thanks to you, Becca, Jonesy and the rest of the
great team for shattering my comfort zone every time I come to class!

imageI’ve never been considered an athlete, and because of my hectic schedule, spending hours in the gym trying to "pump" myself up has always failed. In the past, I would spend about six months rigorously training, and then I would fall off the wagon. My level of fitness never progressed, and I never achieved the athletic body I wanted.

Working with Andy changed my outlook and my fitness routine. I work out in different ways (like through mountain biking and snowboarding), and when I do go to the gym, I’m in and out in 45 minutes. Because he created a specific workout that addressed my lifestyle, my fitness goals, and my particular body and metabolic type, I have slowly but surely turned into an athlete.

The most valuable thing I have gained from working out at Petranek Fitness is a willingness to do that which I previously thought I could never do. Although the workouts are intense and the exercises sometimes foreign, Andy breaks them down and approaches them in a way that makes you trust you are indeed capable of executing them.

It is an approach that has affected me both physically and mentally. I am now a better competitor in the sports in which I train, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. I am stronger, faster, and have better endurance than ever before. Since joining Petranek Fitness, I gained the confidence to run my first 5K and compete in my first adventure race.

I also feel much more positive about my body image. Wearing a bikini at the pool is no longer a stress inducing occasion and I was even asked to do a photo shoot for an online fitness magazine. I recently spent time with friends I had not seen in a few months, and every one of them complimented me immediately on the changes in my body’s appearance.

The workouts at Petranek Fitness are the most intense I have ever experienced, but also the most rewarding. There is nothing quite like listening to Andy explain the workout and thinking, “How am I going to do that?” and then within half an hour realizing you accomplished something you did not think possible.

Andy Petranek is a fitness coach like no other. He's a great combination of trainer, educator, and motivator. The workouts he creates for me are designed to address my own particular issues with coordination, strength, balance, and even competition. Training with Andy is nothing like the boilerplate workouts I've done with other trainers. Besides being the best educated and qualified trainer I've ever worked with, Andy's an inspiration. Even though I'm in my 50s and have been exercising regularly for most of my life, what I've gotten from Andy in the past year has taken my fitness and my mindset about what's possible to a whole new level.

imageI came to Andy Petranek in March, 2004 looking to increase strength and get help with a recurrent back problem. I have been physically active most of my life and a few years ago tested at the ninetieth percentile for aerobic fitness for my age group (over fifty.) Unfortunately since I neglected a strengthening program I experienced significant decline due to age related muscle mass loss.

Two years ago I began working with the book Strength Training past Fifty and did the recommended program twice a week. Progress was very slow and the exercises were extremely boring and tedious. During that time I had also been doing Swiss ball exercises from a Paul Chek video a chiropractor loaned me. I don't live in America and planned to visit Colorado last spring and contacted a Chek practitioner in the state from the website. When my travel plans changed she recommended Andy.

I have worked with him for about nine or ten sessions during two visits to LA this year. Since beginning an upper and lower body strengthening program in the last three months I have made incredible gains of about five or six times what I started with. I would have believed this to be impossible only a few months ago. There have been major improvements in my bicycle riding and roller skiing as a result. I'm don't need someone to motivate me but Andy gave me the confidence that I could push myself way beyond what I was doing. I have found him to be a very knowledgable, patient, and skilled teacher and highly recommend him. I look forward to working with him the next time I'm in LA.

image Andy Petranek is more than a fitness trainer, he's an educator. I started training with him 18 months ago after suffering a knee injury. I had become sedentary, was gaining weight, and no longer felt comfortable in my own body. Andy immediately evaluated my lifestyle and recommended that I change my eating habits and exercise three to five days a week. At first, I didn't listen to him.

A year later, I weighed the same and my knee still was in pain, so I decided to take Andy's advice. He analyzed my metabolism; based on the results, he educated me on the types of foods I should and shouldn't be eating. He then designed specific exercises that would strengthen my knee.

The end result: For the first time in my life, I've successfully incorporated regular exercise and healthy eating habits into my lifestyle. My knee feels great and I've dropped 23 pounds. I love my new body. My wife loves my new body. We both love Andy!

I’ve always been an athlete of sorts. My dad had me water-skiing at age five and running with him at nine. I ran track, played basketball, did mini triathlons, two NYC marathons and competed in a long expedition adventure race in New Zealand. I met Andy in 1998, as one of two support crew for his adventure racing team in the Raid Gauloises, Ecuador. The first thing I remember about Andy was his charismatic smile and his happy, energetic personality and how extremely fit he was. He was always well organized, honest, and smart and I never saw him lose his temper or be condescending to anyone. His athleticism and dedication to what he was trying to accomplish and his teammates was admirable. Needless to say, I was impressed. After the race, my life took me away from my own athletic endeavors to report on the accomplishments of “real” athletes. I got a job as a reporter for Fox Sports, got married and in 2003 had a baby -- and gained 70 pounds! I didn’t see Andy again until 2004 when I desperately needed someone that I could trust to get me back into the shape I used to be in. We met and talked about a program suited for me, which included not only training but nutrition as well. Andy is one of the most knowledgeable people in the fitness industry and he knew exactly what would work for me. His system is unlike any trainer I’ve ever met because it works your whole body in a short amount of time. You rarely do the same workout twice, except to see how you’ve progressed. When you finish his workout you’re sweating, exhausted and in awe that you were able to do what you did. Having Andy as a trainer has been the key to my mental and physical well-being. I feel like a better wife and mother because I’m taking care of myself again. I also feel stronger and have more energy. Yes, sometimes I still get frustrated that my body is taking a bit longer than I thought it would to bounce back, but Andy is always there, encouraging and pushing me; with that big charismatic smile. Thank you, Andy.

When I first came to Petranek Fitness it was because I was having some persistent low back problems that were interfering with my ability to play baseball. I had had an MRI, been to physical therapy, and just didn’t feel like I was getting stronger.

When I first began with Andy, he took the time to analyze my entire range of motion for all things related to movement and began working very slowly and deliberately with me from the “core” out. Step by step I could feel my core stabilizing and strengthening and as it did I began to relax my fear and the “holding” I had been doing with my back. I’m 8 months into the program now and having been back playing ball the last 4 of those months. I’m now at a place where I’m playing with full confidence that I can cut loose, play back-to-back games and know that I have the strength and stability to do it. Andy offers just the right balance between challenging and supporting that all successful coaches provide to produce the results you want.

I can't believe it's only been five months since I started training at Petranek Fitness. Andy has proven to be a dedicated coach and fitness trainer who is committed to teaching each and every one of us that we do indeed have the power to take ownership of our health. When I first met Andy, I was immediately impressed by his thirst for knowledge, inspired by his contagious spirit and motivated by his positive attitude. There's not doubt that Andy lives his philosophy.

From day one, you will experience comradeship like you've never known and a supportive atmosphere that is second to none. The workouts are intense, demanding, but without question, worth it. They not only challenge your body, but your mind. I find that for me, the mind part is the tougher of the two. Andy's workin' on that! As many will tell you, those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it. That quote might as well be the theme for Petranek Fitness, because you really do start taking the word CAN'T out of your vocabulary.

I would recommend Andy and Petranek Fitness to any individual seeking to make a positive change and regain that lust for life. No matter what fitness stage you're at, I guarantee you, you will improve. I come from dancer's background and a very strong core type of training, but never possessed the aerobic fitness that I knew I wanted. In five months, my cardio fitness level has tripled. I can honestly say that I am proud of my progress, the commitment to myself and to the friends I have met here. Work hard. Play hard. Laugh hard. Come and check it out. You'll do all three.

I just wanted to let you know just how much I appreciate what I have gotten out of Petranek Fitness and CrossFit during the last year. As the only member of the 300 Club (combined age and weight!), it has been a challenge to catch up with all the younger, lighter and better looking people at the gym. My wife and kids complain that I am obsessed with CrossFit, and every Monday I compare my weekend sessions with Will Cipes and another guy equally obsessed with workouts. My oldest daughter is swinging up to a 70lb. kettlebell, and my 19 year old son has to work to beat me when he visits Petranek (actually, Sunday I beat him by 5 seconds, much to his chagrin). But more important to me is the phosphagenic camaraderie that hovers over the gym in a sweaty miasma at the end of each class, and nervous greetings before each class as we share our deepest fears about the workout to come. So thank you all. I look forward to many more years of walking the edge of the cliff with you all.

In elementary school, I was the last picked for kickball. In junior high track and field, I came in last in the long jump, high jump, shot put, sprints, hurdles, and long distance runs. In high school, I got hurt playing every sport, including golf. In fact, I got hurt sitting in the bleachers just watching football. Hand/eye coordination was a joke, I fell down the stairs at least four times, and I tripped while receiving my diploma on graduation day.

So you can imagine my surprise when I started working out at Petranek Fitness and subsequently won the Petranek Fitness Challenge. I've had other trainers, and I’ve gotten stronger, but it wasn’t until I started training with Andy that I began to build skills, coordination, and balance. My body is slowly but surely beginning to cooperate with my mind. I could say it’s a miracle, but really it's the training at Petranek Fitness.

Years of going to the gym three days a week and following the traditional weight lifting routines with cardio on the “off” days just weren’t working for me. I was bored with my workouts and saw no gains whatsoever. I continued to gain fat and slide into my 40s resigned to the fact that I would probably look and feel like the typical middle-aged, overweight man.
I had no idea what direction to go with my exercise and diet, but I knew that I needed to get back in shape. My wife knew that if anyone could motivate me it would be my longtime friend Andy. The only trouble was that I lived on the East Coast and Andy ran his CrossFit program in Los Angeles. How to do it? Simple - travel to LA for an intense two day intro to CrossFit training followed by online e-coaching!
I was a little skeptical about my investment in this new fitness program. After my short trip to LA to train under Andy’s guidance, I was never so excited by a fitness program in my life. I started following the CrossFit program (three days on, one day off) and reported my daily scores and results to Andy online and we talked on our weekly coaching call. With Andy’s help, I also focused on my diet by just eating right, not by counting calories. Andy pushed me to explore my limits of fitness and didn’t accept excuses (I’ll never forget the time I complained about not being able to do some of the Olympic lifts with Andy asking, “What’s wrong, are you 80?”). Whenever I got the workout from Andy and didn’t have a piece of equipment or complained of lack of time to do a workout, he’d push me to come up with substitutes and ways to carve out a small piece of time each day to do at least part of the workout of the day. What I didn’t realize at the time was that Andy was changing my mindset along with my body. He made me realize that working out wasn’t just a chore, but a way of life.
Well, all that hard work paid off in spades! I’m 41 now and in the best shape of my life. Eight months of CrossFit, two trips to LA for intensive training one-on-one coupled with e-coaching saved my life! I’m stronger, more flexible, and able to do things I couldn’t do when I was a young Marine lieutenant 18 years ago! Working out each day is now the highlight of my day and I find a way to “make it happen” no matter how busy I get. I eat right and, now that I’m 23 pounds lighter, my overall health has improved dramatically. I function better at work and I’m a better husband and father. I’m like the typical before and after stereotype one sees on the late-night weight-loss and fitness programs, only this is the real deal. I owe it all to Andy!

Working out with you has changed my life in a lot of positive ways. I sleep better, look better, think faster at work, am more disciplined, feel better about myself, eat considerably better, have higher goals and expectations all around, and am slowly knocking down the walls between me and what I once thought impossible.

Recently, those walls have been falling faster and faster.

And I feel my new energy reflected off of the people around me. It's true!

Petranek Fitness has been like a church to me.

So thanks, Andy!

imageBased on my excellent results, I highly recommend to you the Physical Training Services of Andy Petranek.

In January of 2003 I began training with Andy. At the time, I was 57 years of age, with cardiac stints, in mediocre physical condition - that is to say no strength in my arms, legs, and abdomen and no stamina. I was plagued for the past few years with shoulder pain (untreated rotator cuff injuries) that severely limited my range of motion and knee pain (due to untreated torn meniscus cartilage) that hurt with every change of position. For all my height of 6’3”, I was overweight at 233 lbs. I had, for several years, resisted my physician’s recommendations to have my shoulders and knees surgically treated. As a practicing dentist, I’m frequently called upon to treat my patient’s TMJ pains and I’ve found much success with non-surgical therapies. On the basis of these successes I was sure that there must also be non-surgical approaches to the healing of shoulder and knee joint injuries.

During my first 12 months with Andy, we met three times a week. It was not a “quick fix” but a satisfying “complete fix”. Andy began with exercises that strengthened my “core muscles” as well as the muscles that fed into and surrounded my suffering joints. Whenever an exercise caused pain to any joint, Andy immediately stopped the process and presented me with an alternative way to work the target muscles without triggering the joint pain. I’ve been very impressed by Andy’s wide knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise physiology that guided me to improve my muscles without further injuring or stressing my joints.

Prior to beginning each session, he reviews my medical and physical status to learn of changes that may have developed since the last session or may impact the current session. During each session he takes thorough notes on the exercises that I do as well as the response and results I may have. He often refers back to previous notes to track progress and maintain continuity. In the medical arts we say that “A doctor is only as good as his notes” and I believe that the same holds true in Andy’s profession. I believe that Andy is a true professional in his field.

After the first year, I found that all of my joint pains were eliminated and I had regained my full range of motion without discomfort (the only exception was my left knee when sitting in a kneeling meditation position). By the time of this writing. I’ve learned to exercise on my own and I see Andy about three times a month for refinement and stamina development.

imageAndy Petranek is no ordinary fitness professional. He is passionate about his work and it shows. The quality of his work is far beyond expectation, and one that you do not ordinarily see in others in the professional fitness industry. Additionally, his fitness programs are well though out. You can tell right away that these programs are proven and are derived from much thought and experience. They go just beyond somebody showing you to use a certain machine a certain way – in fact, we never even use machines. It is something that one can only explain from experience. It is like an old construction framer showing an apprentice a method of building something that comes from years of experience.

Through his experience he saved me time and effort by eliminating the “routine” from my workouts and maximizing the intensity and effect on my body. I’m amazed at how much I can accomplish in just 30 minutes with him. Andy has taught me how to make health and fitness a habit, and I actually enjoy pushing myself to my limits during his creative workouts. I’m never bored, and never know what to expect one workout to the next, which speaks to his vast knowledge and creativity. As an athlete, I also enjoy the functional movements he’s taught me. They have helped me take my speed, power and agility to the next level. He’s also taught me what to do when I’m traveling or on my own – my workouts will never be the same!

It has really been an amazing experience to watch my mind and body transform in such a short amount of time. Andy…. Thanks for your expertise, and the passion that you possess about exercise and physical fitness. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

Andy,
I was thinking tonight about how much I'm enjoying workouts at Petranek Fitness, and don't really get a chance to say that during the hurly burly of a class, and so this email is the result.

I've been coming long enough now so that I feel like I am on the verge of making the transition from when your classes killed me and it was a victory just to finish in some form or another, to now, where I have developed enough fitness to really want to attack the workouts. I have lost weight, gotten stronger, developed better endurance, I recover more quickly and I can do more workouts during a week now. All of this is immensely satisfying and makes me want to do more of it.

You're a superb teacher, the gym has an extraordinary atmosphere, and you're doing a great thing, so thanks. I'm really happy to have found you!

Ok enough gushing.

imageAndy is expensive and he should be. He’s the very best at what he does. He’s what I call a physical fitness devotee. Andy will drive five hours to a seminar just to pick up 1 or 2 new ideas.

This type of commitment to his craft enables Andy to make profound changes in your physical fitness and overall health after just a couple of visits. I know because he did it with me. I was so impressed I signed my wife up. The question is not, “Can I afford Andy?” The question is, “Can I afford not to go to Andy?” Your answer should be obvious if:
- Your health is a top priority, if not the top
- You are focused and need results now
- Your life and career demand maximum energy
- You want the best physical fitness coach you can find
