Great article.
While it's commendable for this doctor to broach the topic of weight loss with his patients, it would be better for the health care system to support more weight loss options and assist patients with their costs, like they do with so many other preventative medicine. Until they do that, this problem will continue to grow. I have spent years trying to lose the extra 20 to 30 lbs I carry around...ALL the methods--nutritionists, endocrine tests, hypnotists, weight loss centers--I have tried have been paid for in full out of my own pocket b/c my health insurance did not deem them medically necessary, yet my doctor always telss me they are necessary and being overweight is more of a drain on the insurance companies' bottom line then these preventative methods would have been. It's annoying. If this doctor really wants to help, he should talk to his supervisors, health organizations and insurance companies about funding for patients to help them in their weight loss efforts.
